Break Down of Sources
- Aristotle's "Definition of Justice" was used to show evidence that all people have value, and that true justice is to view people as having ability. The article itself simply explains Aristotle's idea of justice as being equality among the people in a civilization. According to Lee A. Jacobus's A World of Ideas, Aristotle was a Greek Philosopher and the successor of Plato in terms of philosophy. He also taught at Plato's Academy and he taught about justice in the sense that it was equality among a people.
- Fredrick Douglass's "Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, an American Slave" was used in the essay to exhibit how it is injustice to judge and restrict what you can do in terms of educational ability. According to Lee A. Jacobus's A World of Ideas, Douglass was a slave who managed to learn how to read and write, and after escaping his slavery, he used these literary skills to become an abolitionist and insight others on what injustice is and how he lived with it (p. 125-127). The piece in itself is a narrative of his life as a slave, and his story of learning to read and write and eventually, through learning these skills, figuring out just how unjustly he was treated as a slave rather than a human being. To him, knowledge was power.
- Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" was an put into the paper in order to exhibit that all people have a conscience and have the right to be able to make their own decisions. Whether people have a disorder like autism or not, they can still think themselves. Thoreau graduated from Harvard and was a transcendentalist who believed in living beyond materialism and embracing inner thought. He wrote "Civil Disobedience" to display the idea that a government cannot tie down humans and make them do only as they please. If someone believes something is unjust in a government, Thoreau says to act against it (p. 141- 144).
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions" is put into my paper to display her idea that someone cannot be judged based upon something they cannot control. According to the book A World of Ideas by Lee A. Jacobus, Stanton was a major feminist who fought for woman's rights. She probably gained inspiration to do this because, in her family, she had been denied a position to take her father's place because, despite her intelligence, she was not a man. This piece of hers was spoken at a convention, exclusive to women, how woman have been shown injustice and that woman should stand and take back the rights exhibited in the piece (p. 169- 171).
- Martin Luther King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail" is used to show that tension is necessary to grow and learn, and that to not allow others to grow is unjust. King was a major advocate of civil rights to all people, black or otherwise. according to the text A World of Ideas by Lee A. Jacobus, he had graduated from Boston University with a masters in theology and was minister. He wrote this letter to explain to people how his actions are just due to the fact that the government's and people's inaction against these injustices have forced his hand (p.179- 181).
- The interview with John Mitchell that I had for this essay is able to be trusted because John has life experiences with raising a child with Asperger Syndrome. He is the father of Jake Mitchell who is a shy individual, but shows great promise, according to John, due to his expertise in computer technology. The interview shows that it is unjust to ever ignore anyone no matter how shy they may be.
- The interview with Sherry Mitchell that I had for this essay is also able to be trusted because she has experience with raising a child with Autism. Ellery Riley, her daughter, has never been given the opportunity to fail since she always has people helping her. This is shown in my paper to be unjust since this does not let her learn and grow if she never fails.
- Lee A. Jacobus's, who according to uconn.edu is an English professor at The University of Connecticut and has a Phd from Claremont Graduate University, A World of Ideas is used for all biographical information on all of the writers of the justice articles by Aristotle, Douglass, etc. This source has been authenticated by my professor so I know that it is trustworthy.
